Justin Timberlake‘s past struggles with alcohol addiction came back this past weekend. The 43-year-old singer was arrested for driving while intoxicated in The Hamptons.
ABC News reported that the “Suit & Tie” artist was arrested on Monday night (June 17) in Sag Harbor, NY, and is set to appear in court on Tuesday (June 18). TMZ reported that Timberlake was partying at a Hamptons hotel before being arrested.
Page Six learned via a source that he went to dinner with his friends, ran a stop sign, and refused to take a breathalyzer test after being pulled over. Police were stationed outside of the restaurant and, upon attempting to leave, they stopped him for a traffic violation. His friends tried to tell the cops not to take him into custody, but he was handcuffed and arrested. Page Six shared photos of Timberlake leaving the court on Tuesday morning, and his next steps are currently unknown.
Justin Timberlake previously spoke about his excessive drinking on an episode of Oprah’s Master Class. He claimed that he actively worked to turn his life around and was seeking help. Addiction is a constant battle and relapses happen, and this was unfortunately the result.
In 2006, he opened up about getting “completely plastered,” otherwise known as inebriated, and claimed that he wasn’t the only person doing so. “I’ve done way too many drugs already. I’ve already inhaled and I’ve already… who knows?” Today reported via Observer Music Monthly. “I’m just like everyone else, I get completely plastered, I’ve done my fair share of drugs and I’ve been caught places with my pants down. It’s just I make sure there are no cameras around.”
“What I really think is that I’ve never done anything that bad,” he continued. “I don’t show up drunk to functions and the drugs I do have been in my own private time… If Courtney Love shows up to a function it’s like: ‘Oh that’s Courtney Love,’ but if I show up drunk it’s like: ‘Oh my God.’”
Justin Timberlake recently released his sixth studio album Everything I Thought It Was. The 18-song LP featured his old group *NSYNC, Fireboy DML, and Tobe Nwigwe. The album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and sold 67,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, making it his sixth consecutive top-five album in the United States.
Earlier this year, Usher said he would be willing to make music with JT. “I’ve always wanted to do a record with Justin and have reached out many times, but we’ve never managed to make it happen. I think that he’s an amazing performer,” he told People.
“I think that he has a legacy that should be respected and not compared to anybody else […] Do I feel at times that the score was a bit unfair in terms of how people even judged us or some of the things that may have been given to him? He had better management staff, you know what I’m saying? Access to things I didn’t. I’m cool with that.”
