Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has already set numerous NFL records.

Unsurprisingly, Mahomes memorabilia is already selling at record prices as well.

On Goldin Auctions, an extremely rare Mahomes Panini National Treasures #161 rookie card - which includes an autographed patch - sold for a whopping $861,000, per Tommy Beer of Forbes.

Only five of these cards exist, according to Beer, who noted that it's "the most expensive football card ever sold."

According to Darren Rovell of The Action Network, the most expensive football card previously sold was a 2000 Tom Brady Autographed Rookie Contenders card. That card sold for $555,988 just last week, per Rovell.

Fittingly, it'll be Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who face Mahomes and the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV this Sunday. Not only is it a battle of arguably the NFL's top two quarterback, but it's also a showdown of the two quarterbacks whose rookie cards sold for record prices.

The game will take place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida this Sunday.

Brady is looking to win his seventh Super Bowl ring, while Mahomes and Kansas City are looking to become the first back-to-back champions since the 2003 and 2004 New England Patriots.

Several sports cards of current athletes have sold for astronomical prices over the past year. A rookie card of Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout - widely regarded as the best player in baseball - sold for $3.93 million back in August.

Three months earlier, an autographed Trout rookie card sold for $900,000 at auction.

That marked the most expensive trading card ever sold.

Back in July, a rookie card of Los Angels Lakers star LeBron James (which included his signature and a jersey patch) sold at auction for $1.845 million. This became the most expensive modern-day sports card ever sold.

As the legends of Mahomes, Brady, James, Trout and other active athletes continue to grow, so too will the prices of their sports memorabilia - especially rookie cards.
